6 Day Journey From Auckland to Rotorua
Day 1–2: Auckland and Waiheke Island
Distance from Auckland: ~40 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland
Arrive into Auckland airport before travelling into the city for a night or two stay. Here you'll have the freedom to explore the heart of the city and surrounding suburbs, each offering a slightly different experience. Enjoy a leisurely walk along Wynyard Quarter's active waterfront, browse the refined boutiques of Ponsonby and Parnell, or spend an evening among the lively bars and restaurants of the CBD. And just off offshore, Waiheke Island awaits.
Waiheke is one of New Zealand's great short escapes - rolling vineyards, olive groves and beaches that feel a world away from the city skyline still visible across the gulf. Spend a day cellar-hopping between award-winning wineries, many with restaurants perched above the vines, or exploring the many coves and beaches dotted along the coastline, before catching the ferry back into town as the light softens over the harbour.

Day 3–4: North to the Bay of Islands
Distance from Auckland: ~230km, approximately 3 hours' drive to Paihia
Pick up your rental car in the city and head north on State Highway 1 toward one of the country's most storied coastlines. The drive itself is part of the reward, with native bush lining the way, glimpses of the Hauraki Gulf, and small towns worth a coffee stop along the way.
In the Bay of Islands, history and leisure sit side by side comfortably. A visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is essential - this is where New Zealand's founding document was signed in 1840, and the grounds do a genuinely moving job of telling that story through the whare rūnanga (meeting house), the waka taua (war canoe) and the treaty house itself.
For golf lovers, this stretch of coast is also home to Kauri Cliffs, consistently ranked among New Zealand’s top courses. Its clifftop fairways feature the Pacific as a backdrop, and are worth building an entire day around, whether you're playing a round or simply taking in the views over lunch.

Day 5: South to Hamilton and the Waikato
Distance from Paihia: ~350km, approximately 4 hours 15 minutes' drive to Hamilton
Turning south, break up the journey in Hamilton, a growing city that's easy to underestimate. The Hamilton Gardens are the standout experience, comprised of a series of themed, walk-through garden "rooms" such as Italian Renaissance, Japanese, Māori, or traditional English. These consistently rank among the best gardens in the world, and make for a delightful few hours to stretch your legs.
From Hamilton, head to the Waikato's rural fringe to stay the night in Cambridge, just 25 minutes away. This picture-perfect town is full of charm, with tree-lined streets, artisan boutiques and eateries offering a slower, more relaxed pace than city life.

Day 6: Rotorua and On The Point
Distance to Rotorua: ~85km (around 1 hour) from Cambridge
From the rural plains of the Waikato, head south toward a land of geothermal wonder, native forest, and deep Māori culture and history. It's here that this North Island journey comes to its end, and where On The Point awaits as your final stop.
Set at the tip of a private peninsula on Lake Rotorua, On The Point is a luxury accommodation in New Zealand's North Island, where you'll find Kiwi hospitality at its best - thoughtful, approachable but never pretentious.
Our boutique suites, lake cottages and villas look out over the water toward Mokoia Island, native tūī call from the trees, and our restaurant, The Mains, thoughtfully designs seasonal dishes that spotlight the region's best produce. Located just 10 minutes from the city's heart, but a world away, you have the freedom and flexibility to while away your time exactly as you choose.

Should you choose to go out and explore, Rotorua's best experiences are close at hand:
- Volcanic Air Scenic Flights - take off by floatplane from our own private jetty for an unforgettable aerial journey over Mount Tarawera, the crater lakes and Rotorua's volcanic terrain.
- Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa - an elevated lakefront spa owned by local iwi Ngāti Whakaue, offering a two-hour, seven-step restorative journey through geothermal pools, mineral mud and steam.
- Te Pā Tū - widely regarded as one of the country's most authentic Māori cultural evenings, held in native forest with kapa haka, storytelling and a traditional hāngī feast.
- The Redwoods Treewalk - elevated boardwalks and, after dark, illuminated lantern walks through a towering 1901 Californian redwood forest.
Two days or two weeks - however long you choose to linger, our Rotorua luxury lodge holds the same promise: that you are, quite simply, well looked after.
Beyond Rotorua
Following your time with us, you may intend on heading straight to the airport, make the return journey to Auckland, or, if you have more time up your sleeve, continue further south toward Wellington. Some additional stops that are well worth the visit:
- Taupō - An hour south of Rotorua, Taupō trades geothermal drama for alpine scale, with the turquoise waters of Huka Falls thundering past at extraordinary speed and volume. New Zealand's largest lake sits beyond in striking contrast to the volcanic peaks of Tongariro National Park on the horizon.
- Hawke's Bay - Napier's art deco streetscape, rebuilt in the wake of the 1931 earthquake, remains one of the most complete of its kind anywhere in the world. Outside the city, the region unfolds into some of New Zealand's finest wine country, best explored slowly by bike along gentle, vineyard-lined trails.
- Wairarapa - A rural pocket of boutique wineries and wide-open, unpolluted skies, Wairarapa is home to some of the best stargazing in the country. It makes a fitting final stretch of the journey before arriving in the capital.

Planning Your Own North Island Itinerary
Every traveller will shape this journey a little differently - more days on Waiheke, a longer stay in the Bay of Islands, a slower loop through Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa on the way south. That's the beauty of self-guided travel, you have the flexibility to work this North Island road trip as it pleases you.
What stays constant is the value of ending your journey on a slower note, and choosing to stay at a luxury North Island accommodation that enhances your experience, not just a place to rest your head.
