From a Radio Ad to Rotorua Luxury Lodge: Ann's Journey and Love for Rotorua
We sat down with Ann, our General Manager here at On The Point – Lake Rotorua, to learn more about her remarkable journey in the tourism industry. What started with a chance radio ad nearly three decades ago has blossomed into a vibrant, thriving career, ultimately leading Ann to where she is today.
It All Began With a Radio Ad
The Novotel – back then called the Royal Lakeside Novotel Hotel – had just opened, (14 Feb 1996) and they were looking for a PA to the GM. As fate would have it, I heard the ad while driving and made an impulsive decision that changed the course of my career. I turned my car around, parked outside the hotel, and walked in. Standing at the front desk was the General Manager, Rob Murry. I told him I’d heard the ad and was keen to apply.
To my surprise, he invited me to his office right then and there. What followed was a two-hour conversation, after which he asked, “When can you start?” That’s how I embarked on my first role in tourism, spending three years at the Novotel before moving into luxury charter tours for the America’s Cup forming a company called On Board NZ with Craig Armstrong, a local charter operator and a boat builder, Pachoud Motor yachts.
After that, my journey brought me back to Rotorua, where I rebranded the Sheraton Hotel multiple times, then worked for the Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO), helping to secure conference business for the city. After a short break from the industry, I returned as Sales and Marketing Manager for Volcanic Air, where I focused on making the company trade-ready. Eight years later, I moved to Hawke’s Bay to work with their RTO, continuing my passion for promoting New Zealand’s regions, helping businesses get trade-ready, and showcasing their offerings to international markets.
The Next Chapter: Managing a Luxury Lodge
Throughout my career, I stayed connected with David Smail, the Business Manager at Peppers on the Point in Rotorua. Over the years, we’d catch up whenever he and Jamie Main the owner of the lodge visited Hawke’s Bay for Horse of the Year. One day, they mentioned they were looking for a Lodge Manager, and I jumped at the chance. The opportunity to manage a luxury tourism venture was a dream come true.
Fast forward eight years, and here I am. I’ve seen the lodge through the challenges of COVID-19 a major rebrand from a Peppers branded property to a standalone entity and a major multi-million-dollar renovation. It’s been a journey of resilience, growth, and immense pride.
Why I Love On The Point – Lake Rotorua
My favourite part of our Rotorua luxury lodge is the moment I take guests to the front of the property. From there, you get a breathtaking view of the entire estate – five acres of beautifully landscaped gardens that only reveal their full splendour when you turn the corner of the lodge. Looking down, you’ll also spot the animals that call the property home, adding a charming, pastoral feel to the experience.
The best moments are often at breakfast or during checkout, listening to guests gush about the incredible things they’ve seen and done while staying in this magical destination and wishing they had booked for a longer stay.
A Must-Do Experience
The beauty of On the Point is that it offers the best of both worlds. While our boutique accommodation is tucked away on private, gated grounds, it’s only a seven-minute drive from Rotorua’s city centre. This means you can enjoy the lodge’s tranquillity and still explore the region’s vibrant attractions.
At the lodge, we encourage guests to slow down, take in the art and atmosphere, and maybe even ask the kitchen for some carrots to feed the animals. It’s a simple but soul-soothing activity.
My Recommendations for Rotorua
Rotorua is brimming with unforgettable experiences. Immerse yourself in the rich culture, marvel at the geothermal wonders, explore the pristine forests, and enjoy the stunning lakes. A walk through the Redwood Forest is a must – you might even bump into our Mayor Tania Tapsell, who often takes her life-balance moments there.
This destination is one-of-a-kind, and whether you’re staying at our luxury lodge in Rotorua or exploring the wider region, there’s magic to be found around every corner.
